Sarasota on a Shoestring: Family Fun for Less
If you're on a tight budget but still want to explore Sarasota with your family, you’re in for a great time.
A memorable family getaway doesn’t have to come with a premium price tag. There are endless ways to explore the Sarasota area and its six barrier islands without breaking the bank.
Hit the Beach
Find free fun on Sarasota County's family-friendly beaches, from body surfing Gulf Coast waves to picnicking at our public pavilions and concessions. Shellcomb the shoreline for sand dollars and hermit crabs, or hunt for sharks' teeth at Caspersen and Venice Beach.

Catch a Gulf Coast sunset at the #1 Beach in the U.S.
Love a little friendly competition? Kick off a game of beach volleyball at Siesta Beach’s free net setup. End the day watching a vibrant tangerine sunset, or experience a community drum circle on Siesta Beach, Nokomis Beach or Englewood Beach, a weekly celebration of artists, dancers and passersby.
Immerse Yourselves in Nature
Big Waters Land Trust, a local nonprofit located at Bay Preserve at Osprey, provides free nature programs for kids. Wade in the grass flats of Little Sarasota Bay and dip nets to collect creatures like fish, shrimp and crabs. Kids can learn to perform a water quality test alongside local scientists, as well as how to be a good steward of coastal habitats.
Lido Key's Ken Thompson Park is a hidden gem for families looking for a quiet, budget-friendly afternoon and one of the best views of Downtown Sarasota's skyline. The park features a winding mangrove boardwalk where kids can spot tiny crabs and local birdlife, as well as a nautical-themed playground with plenty of room to climb. Take advantage of the free fishing pier to cast a line, or set up a picnic at one of the many bayside tables to watch the boats pass through the inlet.

Check out native mangroves of Sarasota Bay

Kids will love the nature-themed playground and rotating exhibits on local ecology. With plenty of shaded picnic pavilions and an easy-to-walk "interpretive trail" that teaches about the native Florida landscape, it’s a fantastic spot for an educational and budget-friendly family day in the sun.
In North Port, soak up the Old Florida vibes and lush vegetation in Orange Hammock Wildlife Management Area or Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. These wild habitats offer recreational opportunities like fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Explore Farmers Markets

Go Camping
Opt for staying at one of Sarasota County's primitive campsites to save some cash. There are plenty of places to pitch a tent, make s'mores and ditch screen time for nature.

Love lush views? Explore Myakka River State Park (which requires a small admission and campsite fee). During your stay, spot epic wildlife, climb the Canopy Walkway and fish in the river.
Camping and glamping options at Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey offers access to a bounty of nearby hiking/biking and nature trails, like The Legacy Trail, which is free to access.
