Bike & Blade Adventures in Sarasota

With year-round sunshine and mostly flat terrain, the Sarasota area is a bicycling and rollerblading dream for families.

Whether you’re cruising with kids along shaded trails or exploring beachside paths together, there's more than one way to get on a set of wheels in the Sarasota area. Here’s how to plan a family-friendly cycling or rollerblading experience, from easygoing island adventures to tuning up your ten-speed.

Multi-use Trail Systems

The Legacy Trail offers plenty of space for riders of all ages and skill levels. Best part is, depending on your schedule or desire, you can decide where/when your route begins and ends. Make an all-day adventure of it by planning to start from the Trail's most northern or southern terminus to cycle or blade the entire 23 miles. Or, choose from approximately 15 trailheads to hop on and hop off.

Many trailheads offer rest areas with shaded benches, restrooms and water fountains, maps and free parking—ranging from Downtown Sarasota to the Historic Venice Train Depot. Major access points include Payne Park, Ashton Road, Culverhouse Nature Park, Osprey Junction and Patriots Park.

Similarly, the Venetian Waterway Park is a paved, 10-mile (total) multi-use linear trail consisting of two, 5-mile segments along both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway in Venice. It connects Downtown Venice to Caspersen Beach Park, the Shamrock Park Nature Center, Skip Stasko Park and the Legacy Trail.

Both trails showcase Sarasota’s abundant nature, history and charming arts culture—and it’s easy for families to ride or skate together at their own pace, since the trail systems are so varied.

Scenic Bridge & Beach Cruises

Love an incline challenge? Tackle the Ringling Bridge, a 3,097-foot-long, 65-foot-high concrete segmental bridge in Sarasota. With just enough elevation to feel like an adventure, the bridge serves as a key link for cyclists—connecting Downtown Sarasota to St. Armands Circle and Lido Key

For whole-family safety, the causeway features wide, separated walkways on both sides, providing a pedestrian and bike-friendly crossing with scenic views of Sarasota Bay. Pedestrians and cyclists share these dedicated pathways, which are safely separated from vehicle traffic with a railing and cement barrier.

If you're looking for a quieter beachscape ride in Lido Key, try biking from North Lido Beach Park down to South Lido Beach. Or, head down the coast for another kind of pedal-powered adventure. Siesta Key's Turtle Beach is a great place to begin your cycling or rollerblading journey along the bike lanes of the island—past Siesta Beach and ultimately ending in Siesta Key Village for drinks, dining, ice cream and shopping.

Nature Rides & "Mountain" Biking

While Florida may not have mountains, our subtropical landscape still offers thrilling, unpaved pursuits through the area's lush forests and preserves. Trade the beach cruisers or electric bikes for an all-terrain trail bike to maximize outdoor thrills and spot native wildlife, like seabirds, alligators and deer.

BMX or Motorcross Biking

For families seeking high-energy thrills, motorcross biking utilizes compact, 20-inch wheeled bikes built for agility and impact. If your kids or teens want to race for speed on winding dirt tracks or practice gravity-defying tricks, stunts and jumps in a dedicated park, Sarasota provides a local hub where riders can push their limits in a controlled, freestyle environment.
