Sweat It Out at Sarasota's Outdoor Yoga & Pilates Classes

A new year, a new chance to explore outdoor yoga and fitness opportunities around Sarasota County's parks and beaches.

What's better than practicing your yogi squats and downward dogs in the warm sun with a cooling Gulf breeze? Being outdoors gives you access to a whole other world of sensations during your practice. Whether you're mastering a one-foot balance in Eagle pose or gently stretching the spine in Child’s pose, there's something so gratifying about laying your mat on the grass and giving your nervous system a mini-holiday.

From beautifully landscaped parks facing the bay to botanical gardens and white-quartz beaches, discover the many community yoga, Pilates and even Tai Chi classes available to the public outside of a studio in Florida's unbeatable weather and landscapes.

Siesta Key Beach: Monday Through Saturday

Siesta beach yoga

Siesta Key Public Beach Pavilion

Start your mornings with mindfulness and movement on the pure crystal sands of the world-famous Siesta Beach. Led by Lynn of Tranquility by the Sea, gentle yoga classes are donation-based and take place almost every morning (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday), 8:30am-9:30am, and every Wednesday evening for sunset (times change throughout the year). Dress for the weather, bring your towel or mat, drinking water for a unique experience between the green and red lifeguard stands. Look for the yoga flag near the shoreline!

No need to sign up ahead of time, just find your spot in the sand and look forward to a seaside Namaste. While there's no fee for class, most guests contribute around $10 for donation, which helps beach permits and related costs. No reservations are required.

Venice Beach: Daily

You'll never miss a morning flow with Yoga With Elin, hosted 8am–9am every day of the week on Venice Beach. Not a morning person? Catch her sunset sessions at 5pm, Monday–Friday. Yoga instructor Elin teaches yogis to safely maneuver through their back, shoulder and knee issues while leading them to move the way the body was designed to move. These classes take place daily near the Venice Beach Pavilion and are for all abilities, including beginners who have never practiced yoga before and students with disabilities.

There are also special Full Moon Yoga classes to look out for during the full moon phase! Check the Facebook page for specific days and times. No reservations are required for the daily classes, which are supported by donations, so be sure to bring cash to contribute if you wish.

Wellen Park: Tuesday Mornings

At the family-friendly entertainment district of Downtown Wellen Park, enjoy free programming known as the Be Well Fitness Series, which includes weekly yoga on The Great Lawn. Bring a mat or towel and your best self for lakeside yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi on Tuesday mornings, 9am–10am, then grab lunch with your yogi pals at one of the many new restaurants of Wellen Park.

It is required to RSVP your spot and sign a fitness waiver before class online.

Manasota & Nokomis Beaches: Daily

Similarly, enjoy calming, supportive Yoga on the Beach at Manasota Beach (Monday–Thursday, 8:30am) on the north end of Englewood, or Nokomis Beach (Daily, 9am) on Casey Key near the Shark Tooth Concession Stand. Feel the cool Gulf breeze coming off the water in the early hours of the day, feel the soft sand beneath your feet and listen to the gentle waves lapping on the shore as the soundtrack to your practice. These classes take place rain or shine, so dress warm on colder days and wear sunscreen on sunnier ones. Afterwards, meet fellow yogis or stroll the quiet stretch of beach for shark teeth and shells.

No reservations are required, but a signed waiver is requested online. Donations are recommended ($5 and up, via cash or Venmo) for the group of certified instructors and monthly fees.
